eBay Promotion (2) – Arab Horses

I was fortunate to recently acquire at auction an interesting collection of books on Arab horses. Being a rather niche subject books on this topic are often hard to locate and in demand. Furthermore the lot included amongst its number several signed items.

The most interesting and scarce of the titles is A Guide to the Complete Pedigrees of Arabian Horses from United Kingdom (1790-1989). A complete five volume set by acclaimed photographer of Arabian Horses, Wojciech Kwiatkowski. Published in 1994 by Wydawnictwo KAWALKADA, Brwinów, Poland, this edition is limited to 100 copies signed by the author of which the set in my possession is number 36. Whilst a couple of other titles from the series focusing on different countries are available on line, at a quite considerable price, I cannot locate this far more substantial set anywhere. As such I have decided to place it on eBay. The listing can be viewed here, along with further details about the item:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321134550519?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Whilst the content of these volumes would make the average readers eye’s glaze over, the extensive compendium of pedigrees could offer vital insight to the enthusiast, and particularly anyone involved in the breeding of Arab horses.

Another item of particular interest is a first edition of The Arab Horse by John Upton, which features the author’s signature and a unique illustration to the title page. As Upton, to quote Wikipedia, “has a worldwide reputation as an artist and author, specialising in the Arab Horse” this addition may well be of interest to any collectors of his work.

eBay Promotion (1)

From time to time I make use of the auction function on eBay. I thought I would promote a few of the listings I currently have ongoing. Whilst the main constituency of my stock is listed at fixed price on ABE, I tend to use eBay for different purposes. One effective use I have deployed is selling job lots in a specific field, or by a particular author. This has proven a decent means by which I can get a little for books on topics outside of my speciality without having to resort to giving them away or chucking them out. If space were not an issue the need for such activity would be minimal, but alas I do not have that luxury, so am happy to offer up some bargains, if it means clearing volume. I have also used eBay to sell some particularly rare items, the exact value of which I may be unsure of. In fact my best ever sale came through this medium, as I was able to sell the first three parts, of the first edition, of Baden-Powell’s famous handbook Scouting for Boys, for  in excess of £1000. In such cases the auction facility really comes in to its own.

None of my current listings are anything like the Baden-Powell in nature, but I try to keep a fairly steady flow of listings on eBay so it may be worth keeping an eye on for those in search of particularly rare items. My current listings can be viewed here. Several of the lots currently ongoing are detailed below:

23 science fiction novels

27 issues of literary magazine Granta

9 James Hadley Chase, hardback novels

The Great Composers and their Music. Volume 1 Parts 1-6

Lewis, Ben & Lih, Lars T. (2011), Martov and Zinoviev. Head to Head in Halle (November Publications: London). 1st edition. Paperback. Condition: New. 228pp. Illustrated. £10

“We are on the field of battle. The audience in the hall is divided in two sections: it is as if a knife has cut them sharply in two. Two parties are present.”

Grigory Zinoviev’s description of the Halle congress of the Independent Social Democrats (USPD) in October 1920. Would the USDP and its 700,000 members opt for the Third International or attempt to stay a halfway house floating uneasily between communism and official social democracy? The Halle congress would decide.

Here is another book I hold new copies of in stock. I was at school with Ben Lewis, and got to know him through shared political activity whilst I was at University in London. This is his first published work, compiled in conjunction with renowned Lenin scholar, Lars T. Lih. The main body of this book is given over to translations of the speeches delivered by Zinoviev and Martov to the Halle Congress in 1920. Lewis provides an introductory essay placing the events in context, whilst Lih supplies profiles of the two main protagonists.

Some comments on the work:

“A political drama of the highest order … I could not put this book down.”
Professor Bertell Ollman, Dept. of Politics, NYU

“Ben Lewis and Lars Lih are to be commended for making available to a new generation these speeches at the 1920 Halle congress of the USPD, one of the most remarkable moments in the history of the European socialist movement.”
Peter Hudisco-author of The Rosa Luxemburg Reader

“At a time when the left still remains far too ignorant of the events of the German revolution and its aftermath from 1919-1923 it is a great thing when a young scholar and activist like Ben Lewis makes available the record of the Halle congress in English.”
Ted CrawfordRevolutionary History Editorial Board

“An important contribution to the history of communism by a promising young scholar working alongside the highly-respected Lars T Lih.”
Daniel Gaido, co-author of Witnesses to Permanent Revolution

Promotion – Motoring

Kay, Stephen (2009), Cyclecars: An Annotated Index (325 Press: Govilon) 1st edition. Paperback. Condition: New. 128pp. £10

I don’t keep many new books in stock, but I thought I would use this medium to bring light to a couple I do. Stephen Kay is a close friend of my father’s, and someone I know well, hence I jumped at the chance to stock his book.

The title is not widely available. At the time of writing, besides my listing I can track down only one other copy for sale on line, listed on Amazon for a whopping £125!

Cyclecars: An Annotated Index, is just that. Following an introductory essay placing the cyclecar in context, Kay launches into his comprehensive and well illustrated index. The volume concludes with short sections on homebuilt cars and cyclecar controls. A must for enthusiasts of motoring history.

A selection of further motoring titles currently in stock:
